This page covers the questions I’m asked most often. There’s a good chance you’ll find your answer here.
It’s not here to stop you getting in touch – if anything isn’t clear, or you have a different question, I’d still be very happy to hear from you!
No — total beginners are welcome, even if you have never played anything in your life. These lessons are exactly for those who wish to start playing an instrument later in their life and find it hard to follow more technical classes out there.
At the very beginning, we will learn what chords mean and learn to identify the main chords, as students must have this knowledge when we start "talking chords". But that stops there. There is no need to advance to music theory if students don't want to. We learn through practice and simple guidance.
That’s common, and we can adapt! We can take breaks, use easier shapes, do exercises to strengthen your grip and go at your own pace. We can discuss your needs at the very first lesson and go over any necessary adaptations to get you playing confidently!
That can vary greatly from one person to another. So no pressure! But often, within the first few sessions, we start with simple, recognisable songs. However, the focus of our lessons is on the enjoyment of playing music and learning at your own pace while taking advantage of the benefits of playing an instrument, so there is no pressure to start playing songs within the first few lessons.
Yes, you would need your own Ukulele. If you need recommendations for a low-cost Uke to get started, feel free to get in touch, and I am happy to help you choose one within your budget.
In theory, no. You can get started with any Ukulele. Nevertheless, if you have the budget and wish to stick to your hobby, I would recommend getting a Ukulele of reasonable quality. Very cheap Ukuleles can sound very "toy-like" and have various intonation issues, which can put you off playing or make you sound like you are not playing correctly. So to avoid those issues, I would invest in something reasonably good. Please, get in touch if you need to discuss options!
Yes, our first few classes will have a focus on teaching you about your instrument and how to tune it. However, I do not teach how to change the strings. I do have a string replacement service that can be purchased for an additional cost.
